The Yellowknife Outdoor Soccer League is a recreational, semi-competitive mixed league focused on fair play and good sportsmanship.  Our goal to provide the adult population of Yellowknife with a safe, fun and friendly environment to play soccer.  The league is open to all residents of Yellowknife over the age of 16 and we encourage new membership.

The Yellowknife Outdoor Soccer League will follow the Laws of the Game as outlined by the Federation International Football Association (FIFA) with the following exceptions:

  • Teams will field nine players per side including the goalkeeper due to restricted field sizes.

  • Games will consist of 2 halves of approximately 40 minutes each with one 5 minute interval between halves except where shortened by delays or lack of daylight.

Composition of Teams

  • Teams are required to carry at least 15 players on their roster to register for play in the league.
  • Teams are required to pay all league fees prior to their first match.
  • Players without a team can submit applications to the league and will be assigned to teams based on relative skill and the number of existing players on a team’s roster.
  • Teams are required to accept new players, as assigned by the league, up to a total of 22 players.  Players will be assigned based on relative skill as appropriate to the overall goal of achieving competitive balance in the league. (Note: Teams are not limited to 22 players on their roster)
  • Teams may add additional players to their roster until their final regular season game.  Teams may not add additional players before or during the playoffs.
  • Players may not play for more than one team in a season except at the discretion of the Executive Committee.

Conduct

The Yellowknife Outdoor Soccer League requires its members to follow the Laws of the Game as outlined by FIFA. Players are expected to exhibit good sportsmanship and fair play at all times.

Violent or abusive conduct, especially when directed towards officials, shall be met with the strictest penalties.  Any incident of deliberate physical violence shall result in expulsion from the league.

Verbal abuse, dissent and foul language shall be considered cardable offences as outlined under the Laws of the Game.  Referees are encouraged to sanction these offences in accord with the FIFA Code of Ethics.

Disciplinary Committee

It is a goal of this league to eliminate violent or abusive conduct in all forms.  To this end the league will establish a disciplinary committee that will review incidents as necessary.

  • The Disciplinary Committee shall be composed of 5 members, of which 3 shall sit in judgement of each incident.
  • The Referee or either Team Captain involved in a match may request a Disciplinary Hearing.
  • Disciplinary Hearings may not be requested to review or dispute decisions, cards or associated suspensions except at the discretion of the Referee.
  • A Disciplinary Hearing shall be convened as quickly as possible at the discretion of the Disciplinary Committee.
  • Disciplinary Committee members shall not sit in judgement of incidents from games in which they were involved.
  • The Referee and both Team Captains shall attend the Disciplinary Hearing.
  • Any member of the Disciplinary Committee, the Referee, and either Team Captain may request the presence of additional parties as appropriate, with the approval of the Disciplinary Committee.

The Disciplinary Committee has the authority to assign suspensions of up to 3 matches and may involve the Executive Committee in cases where they feel additional penalties are appropriate.

Suspensions

  • Suspensions shall be enforced as per the Laws of the Game for all Red Card offences.
  • Each accumulation of 3 Yellow Cards by a player in a single season shall result in a 1 match suspension.  2 Yellow Cards (acquired in a single game) resulting in a Red Card and the associated suspension shall not count towards the cumulative total.
  • It is the responsibility of the Team Captain to ensure that suspended players from their Team do not attend matches from which they are suspended. Teams found in violation of this rule will forfeit the match in question.
  • Notification of suspensions will be automatically distributed via e-mail to all relevant parties.
